10 Reasons to Visit Angel Fire This Winter

Family enjoying the snowy mountain
Angel Fire is family friendly

While the list could be even longer, I wanted to share some of the top reasons I made Angel Fire New Mexico my home away from home and why winter is a great time to visit!

  1. Affordability - Let's face it, skiing or snowboarding is expensive! Angel Fire is an excellent value with online lift ticket prices starting at just $21 for children and adults at $110 for the day.

  2. Family Friendly - Angel Fire Resort won the Visitors’ Choice Award for Most Family Friendly by OnTheSnow magazine in 2023. Angel Fire has all the activities kids love - skiing, snowboarding, sledding, swimming, tubing, etc. The ski school accommodates children with a 4:1 student to instructor ratio and all staff are specially trained to work with children. The lessons include lift tickets, helmets and ski/snowboard rentals.

  3. Great for All Levels - OnTheSnow magazine also awarded Angel Fire their Best Beginner Resort in 2023, but that doesn't mean the resort doesn't have its fair share of difficult runs. It has a total of 18 Green runs, 45 Blue and 18 Black. For those that like even more of a challenge, the terrain park (Liberation Park) has everything you need with jumps ranging from 15 feet to over 50 feet.

  4. Accommodations - whether you're looking for a small condo for 2 or a large mountain home for you and all your friends, Angel Fire has you covered. Angel Fire has every level of luxury and price to accommodate a wide range of visitors. The resort has single rooms near the lift and there are plenty of vacation rentals around the resort (shameless plug for www.ositocabin.com).

  5. Night Skiing - Angel Fire is the only place you can night ski/snowboard in New Mexico. Night skiing is available most weekends and holiday weeks during the ski season. Night skiing starts at $15 for a child pass and $25 for an adult add-on day pass.

  6. Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing - Angel Fire has over 15 skiable acres of skate, groomed and classic cross country trails. The Nordic Center also has snowshoeing lanes and rentals for both activities.

  7. Tubing and Sledding - Visitors of all ages love tubing and sledding. A fun 3-lane tubing hill is available on the mountain (near the bunny hill) for $35/hour and a sledding hill is available outside the Nordic Center at the country club. Pricing is $12/person/hour and sled rentals are extra (or you can bring your own plastic sled).

  8. Events - Angel Fire has a wide variety of fun events such as the opportunity to ski with Santa, take a stargazing tour or catch a USASA skiing/snowboarding competition. Something fun is always happening.

  9. The Sky - New Mexico Skies are truly amazing. Angel Fire got its name from Native American tribes who described the sky as the “fire of the gods.” Franciscan Friars interpreted that as the “fire of the angels.” If the daytime sky doesn’t amaze you, the night sky will as the milky way glows above the Carson National Forest.

  10. Small Town Vibes - I love how the librarian will welcome you to the cozy space where local artists donate their work to support the library and its STEM program. Or, how Phil, the proprietor at the coffee shop I love (TATY at the Bump) will welcome you with a smile while he takes your coffee order and invites you to the painting class they're hosting. People are very friendly in Angel Fire, except maybe if you’re in a competitive pickleball match at the village community center.

Angel Fire has a private airport, but there are also flights into Taos (27 mi), Santa Fe (130 mi) and Albuquerque (174 mi). If driving, please check the road conditions at www.nmroads.com. If you're planning a trip, you can reach me at info@ositocabin.com. I'm happy to help give some good suggestions as well as a discount to my cabin if you mention this blog.

Note: Please check with the resort for current conditions and pricing (800) 633-7463. All prices provided were from January 2024.

This is fantastic! I’d like nothing Nathan to bring my girls here for a winter adventure South Carolina can’t provide us!
